Siena's climate follows a pattern that most Tuscany visitors find reassuring: proper seasons, a dry summer, and a wetter autumn and winter that turn the surrounding countryside into something close to a watercolor. The city sits on a ridge at roughly 320 meters above sea level, which softens the extremes you might expect from central Italy. Summers are warm and largely dry, with July and August reliably reaching around 30°C (86-87°F), but the hilltop position means nights stay relatively comfortable. Lows in midsummer hover around 17-18°C (63-64°F), which makes sleeping without air conditioning feasible in a way it often isn't in Florence or Rome. The summer dryness defines the season: July typically sees only about 28mm of rain across the whole month, and the landscape around Siena shifts from the lush green of spring to sun-bleached gold. The autumn reversal is striking. September marks the transition, still warm at 25°C (77°F) during the day but already wetter at around 81mm, and by October and November the hills around Siena are soaking up over 100mm a month. November is the wettest month on the calendar, close to 124mm, and a grey November day here has a particular moody atmosphere. Fog settles in the valleys. Warm lamplight spills from the trattorias around Piazza del Campo. Winter is cool rather than severe: January and February lows touch 3°C (37°F) and highs rarely get above 11°C (51°F), though snow inside the medieval walls does happen occasionally and makes the city look rather extraordinary when it does. Spring comes in gradually, which is worth knowing if you're planning around it. March is still decidedly cool at highs around 14°C (58°F), but April shifts the mood noticeably. The crete senesi countryside to the south of Siena turns green and photogenic, and the city begins to feel alive. The rainfall pattern across the year has two wet peaks (spring and autumn) and a pronounced dry trough from June through August, a classic Mediterranean signature even if the elevation takes the edge off the summer heat.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Cultural
Mid-April through early June and again from mid-September through October offer the most rewarding conditions. Siena's cathedral, the Palazzo Pubblico, and the Pinacoteca Nazionale are all accessible without the press of high summer. The light on the Gothic architecture tends to be favorable in shoulder season. The city has more of its own personality on display when it isn't overwhelmed by tour groups.
Walkers and hikers
May and October come closest to good for the trails through the surrounding province. May brings wildflowers, green rolling hills, and highs of 22°C (72°F). Warm enough to be comfortable on long days out without overheating. October offers harvest colors across the vineyards and olive groves, crisp mornings, and the kind of golden afternoon light that the landscape around Siena seems built for.
Budget-minded travelers
November through February, outside the Christmas-New Year stretch, hotels drop their rates considerably. The museums have no queues. The city belongs largely to the Sienese.
Coast
For anyone drawn to the coast, the Maremma and Grosseto stretches of the Tuscan coastline are roughly 90-120 minutes by car. Late May through June tends to offer warm conditions before the full summer rush takes hold.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Siena.

Year-Round Essentials
Comfortable walking shoes with rubber or gripped soles
the medieval cobblestones are uneven throughout the city and become slippery when wet. Anything smooth-soled becomes a liability within about ten minutes of arrival.
A compact rain jacket or packable umbrella
earns its weight from September through May in particular, though even summer visitors encounter the occasional afternoon storm
Layers
the hilltop position means evenings can drop ten degrees from the afternoon high. Summer days in Siena involve moving between air-conditioned museums and stone streets that trap heat.
Something to cover shoulders and knees for cathedral visits
the Duomo requires modest dress and there's no getting around it
A small daypack with room for a water bottle and a layer
the city rewards wandering on foot and you'll want your hands free
spring
Clothing
medium-weight waterproof jacket, versatile trousers or jeans that can handle cooler evenings
Footwear
footwear that deals with both rain and cobblestones
summer
Clothing
lighter fabrics, linen

a light cardigan for air-conditioned museums and cooler evenings remains useful
